PhD: Coupling of planetary-scale Rossby wave trains to local extremes in heat waves over Europe

Our ability to predict the weather up to a week or more ahead saves our societies billions of Euros annually and protects human life and property. The great challenge today is to identify the limits of weather predictability in different situations and produce the best forecasts that are physically possible.

On July 1st 2015, the Transregional Collaborative Research Center “Waves to Weather” (W2W; SFB/TRR165; http://w2w.meteo.physik.uni-muenchen.de/) was established to address these issues and to deliver the underpinning science urgently needed to pave the way towards a new generation of weather forecasting systems.
The W2W consortium consists of:
- the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU, Munich)
- the Johannes Gutenberg-University (JGU, Mainz)
- the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), together with
- the Technische Universität München (TUM)
- the Heidelberg University, and
- the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR, Munich).

The following PhD-position is available within the W2W consortium:

Location: Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe, Germany. Some time shall be spent at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Mainz.

Advisor: Prof. Dr.Andreas H. Fink

This PhD position will contribute to project C4 "Coupling of planetary-scale Rossby wave trains to local extremes in heat waves over Europe" of the W2W consortium.

Outline: Predicting the peak intensity and spatio-temporal extent of European heat waves like in 2003 and 2010 is a great challenge of weather forecasting today. It does not only depend on the exact prediction of the upper-level Rossby wave pattern (including Rossby-wave breaking), but also on the forecasting of the synoptic and mesoscale dynamics in the upper-level ridge area.
The successful candidate will have the exciting opportunity to work in a joint project co-led by an expert in the theory and diagnosis of large-scale atmospheric waves (PI Prof. Dr. Volkmar Wirth, Mainz) and another in synoptic-to-mesoscale dynamics (PI Prof. Dr. Fink). He/she will work in the latter field under the supervision of PI Fink and strive to disentangle the relative roles of synoptic to mesocale processes for recent European heat waves. To assess the contribution of surface characteristics like soil moisture, the Ph. D. study involves some experiments with the new German ICON model. He/she will also look into ensemble re-forecast and reveal dynamic reasons for good/bad forecast in individual ensemble members. He/she will work closely with a second PhD based in Mainz (major superviser PI Wirth), who will diagnose the dynamics of upstream Rossby waves. Both PhDs will especially conduct joint research on case studies and on the development of novel heat wave indices and create an European heat wave climatology.

Requirements: The ideal candidate for this project will have a strong background in atmospheric dynamics and experiences in atmospheric modelling. A degree in meteorology or a closely related discipline, experience with scientific programming (e.g. linux, fortran, idl, ncl, cdo, ) is required.
The position is funded until June 2019. The successful PhD candidate will be remunerated according to TV-L 13 (75%) and should start as soon as possible.

The contract is time-limited according to the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law (WissZeitVG). The salary scale is TV-L E13. Employment shall begin as soon as possible.
