Diese Stellenanzeige ist abgelaufen. Finden Sie hier zahlreiche ähnliche Jobs.

The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization at Göttingen, Germany, is an international research institute. It performs both experimental and theoretical fundamental scientific research and currently employs about 280 people.

At the Laboratory for Fluid Dynamics, Pattern Formation and Biocomplexity led by Prof. Eberhard Bodenschatz, we seek to fill

2 PhD positions (m/f)

within the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks, starting in September 2016 or at the earliest convenience. The Innovative Training Networks project will bring together young researchers to work on developing the understanding and modeling of atmospheric clouds. We are looking for early stage researchers to join our research team to fill the two positions described below. Both positions will entail collaboration with other institutions and industrial partners across Europe that form the Training Network.

Position 1

The work will focus on field measurements of cloud physics, in particular droplet dynamics, at the research station Schneefernerhaus near the Zugspitze mountain and development of numerical scheme that reproduces the experimental results. The work will likely entail design and development of experimental set-ups, data acquisition with state-of-the-art high-speed cameras, image processing, development of efficient data compression and data processing algorithms, and devising theoretical and numerical models to help our understanding of the experimental results.

Position 2

The work will focus on investigating ways to create large number of liquid droplets with fine size and speed control and high throughput, and subsequently studying collisions and coalescence of droplet pairs under controlled flow conditions. If interested, opportunity to participate in several field experiments at the research station Schneefernerhaus
near the Zugspitze mountain.

Your profile

We invite applications from dedicated and enthusiastic individuals with:
• Master's or comparable degree in Physics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or related fields,
• strong experimental background,
• strong quantitative skills (data analysis, image processing, programming),
• eagerness to learn new skills and apply established ones,
• ability and desire to work in a multi-disciplinary international team,
• good command of English language, German is an asset,
• good writing skills,
• interest in fluid dynamics, turbulence, experimental physics, programming.

Following points are also desirable for Position 1:
• willingness and enthusiasm to work in the field (a number of 1-2 week campaigns at high-altitude locations
are to be expected) ,
• experience with, or interest in, FPGA programming,
• experience with, or interest in, computational fluid dynamics and numerical methods
• experience with, or interest in, optical systems and laser technology.

Our offer

In close collaboration with the Georg August University, a structured PhD program is offered in the graduate programof the Physics Department.

The PhD positions are limited to 3 years. Salary and working hours are in accordance with the funding guidelines of the European Research Council and include a mobility allowance and family allowance.

The Max-Planck society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce andtherefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to
apply.
