The Environmental-Physics group at the Centre for Applied Geoscience (University of Tübingen, Germany) currently has several positions available for young researchers (PhD students) with a background as

Meteorologist, Physicist, or Engineer

that are interested in experimental atmospheric physics in the lower atmospheric boundary layer. All positions are imbedded in new research projects in the fields of aerosol formation / transport, and wind energy / wind-turbine interaction, both inland and off-shore.

Our main measurement instruments in these new research projects are our small unmanned air - craft ( UAV ) of type MASC (Multi-purpose Airborne Sensor Carrier). These are automatically operating fixed-wing aircraft of about 5 kg weight, carrying about 1.5 kg of scientific payload. The latter consists of fast sensors for 3D wind vector, temperature, humidity and particles. Most of these systems are manufactured in-house. Besides the sensors we develop calibration methods and software for data analysis, especially with respect to turbulence theory and time-series statistics. Our main interest is atmospheric turbulence , e.g. turbulent energy, momentum and mass exchange.

The tasks in the research projects and in the working group include
• performing own research in the field of boundary-layer meteorology and turbulence
• ... with focus on wind energy or aerosol formation / transport, under continuous supervision
• … by using our research UAV in various experimental campaigns
• maintenance and further development of our airborne measurement systems (with focus on turbulent wind vector, temperature, humidity, aerosol, trace gas)
• teaching bachelor and master students in tutorials, laboratory courses and seminars

The ideal candidate studied atmospheric science, physics, electronics or fluid mechanics with a strong experimental focus and has already experience in:
• environmental measurement technology and sensors
• data analysis and statistics in atmospheric science and fluid dynamics
• atmospheric physics, fluid dynamics, boundary-layer meteorology, turbulence, aerosol
• UAV / model aircraft operation and control
• Linux and R, C or C++ programming

The positions are available from 1 January, 2017, on and will be open until filled. We offer the opportunity to write a PhD thesis. Salary will be according to the German public service (75 % of TVL E13; about 31,500 € p.a., before tax and social insurances; around 20.000 € p.a. after deductions).

In case of equal qualification and experience physically challenged applicants are given preference. The University of Tübingen aims at increasing the share of women in research and teachingand encourage female scientists to apply.
