Forest Ecology, Department of Environmental Sciences, ETH Zürich

The mission of the Forest Ecology Group is to further our understanding of the structure and function of forest ecosystems in mountain areas, with a particular focus on the European Alps. A process-based understanding of the dynamics of these systems provides the basis for improving their management in an era of multiple and sometimes conflicting forest uses, including protection of people and infrastructure, wood production, carbon storage, water resources, biodiversity, and recreation. We study structural and functional aspects of these systems, which typically operate on time scales beyond normal research grants and sometimes beyond a human life span, in terms of the processes that determine their behavior over the short as well as the long term and at spatial scales ranging from individual trees to landscapes (i.e., 10-100 km²). Methodologically, a combination of modeling activities and field-based analyses is employed to establish and test hypotheses on processes in near-natural and managed mountain forest ecosystems.
