We work on the developmental genetics of the beetle Tribolium castaneum. The main goal of our research is to identify genes that are responsible for head development and to understand their interactions. Another aim is to resolve the old and infamous "arthropod head problem": Still there is no agreement on the number of segments that compose the insect head, the contribution of nonsegmental anterior tissue and the nature of the labrum. Gene expression patterns and developmental data shed new light on this old problem. In addition we interprete our results with respect to evolutionary changes that underlie the evolution of development (evo-devo).
