King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST)

Solar and Photovoltaics Engineering Research Center (SPERC)

The Solar and Photovoltaics Engineering Research Center actively contributes to KAUST’s core tasks of research, education, and economic development. SPERC’s mission is:
  • To be a premier research and educational resource in solar energy research and engineering on the world stage and to train the next-generation workforce in the field of renewable energies based on the power of the sun.
  • To provide integrated efforts from the design of new materials in emergent technologies to systems engineering in established technologies.
  • To be the reference Center in solar energy research and engineering in the Saudi Arabia and the MENA region.
Global StrategyWith a focus on solar energy conversion, SPERC’s strategic axes are:
  • To strengthen efforts in emerging photovoltaic technologies based on organic and hybrid materials, quantum dots, or perovskites.
  • To develop established photovoltaic technologies based on crystalline silicon and inorganic thin films.
  • Where relevant, to cover the value chain from materials to device integration, modules, and systems, which means an ability to drive projects from fundamental materials science to device engineering, pilot scale development, and eventual industrial transfer.
  • To integrate environmental sustainability at the very early stages of research.
  • To assess opportunities to enter new areas of solar energy conversion, such as concentrated solar thermal (CST) and processes (CSP).
  • To integrate our efforts into fields critical to the Kingdom such as water desalination and advanced chemical processes.
