Zelluläre Neurophysiologie

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is an important gastrointestinal (GI) signaling molecule, which is critically involved in maintaining intestinal homeostasis by stimulation of local nervous reflexes. Abnormalities of 5-HT signaling have been implicated in the various gastrointestinal disorders. However, mechanisms regulating the changes in 5-HT content as well as the precise role of 5-HT upon inflammation are still unknown.

The aim of our project is to get a more information about the 5-HT functions in GI tract, identify the subtypes of 5-HT receptors that are expressed in the gut and determine their distribution and functions. Moreover, we address our research to the investigation of 5-HT signaling in regulation of functional interplay between immune and enteric nervous systems upon physiological and pathological conditions.
