The Friedrich Miescher Institute is devoted to fundamental biomedical research. As part of the Novartis Research Foundation and one of the institutes of Novartis Corporate Research, our goal is to exploit new technologies to further our understanding of the basic molecular mechanisms of cells and organisms in health and disease. We focus on the fields of epigenetics, growth control and neurobiology. In these fields the FMI has gained international recognition as a center of excellence in innovative biomedical research.
Core support from the Novartis Research Foundation is supplemented by competitive fellowships and awards from national and international funding agencies. By hosting postdoctoral fellows and graduate students through our PhD program, we contribute to the training of hundreds of young scientists. Currently the FMI has around 300 staff, including 24 research group leaders and a core of highly trained technicians and support staff. We host 95 PhD students and about 80 postdoctoral fellows from almost 40 different countries.
Our members enjoy Basel as a city of diverse culture and a center for scientific innovation, with a tradition of excellence in academic and industrial research. Our status as part of the Novartis Research Foundation and an affiliate of the University of Basel provides an optimal environment for both academic and applied biomedical research.
