The Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Department of Cell Biology, RWTH Aachen University Medical School and Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Engineering, RWTH, Aachen was established in 2003 and studies genetic programs that determine cell identity and developmental potential, with a focus on hematopoietic stem cells and their differentiated progeny. The impact of important regulators of stem cell phenotype and differentiation potential are investigated in vitro and in vivo by employing genetic engineering, molecular imaging, knockout and knockdown approaches. Further activities aim at engineering cells with an enlarged developmental potential, that extends beyond the hematopoietic system, and the application of such pluripotent cells in medical therapy.
