Institut für Klinische und Molekulare Virologie

The Institut für Klinische und Molekulare Virologie is a Department of the Medical Faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg.

The activities of the Department are concentrated in a basic research program in molecular virology, with emphasis on oncogenic and human pathogenic herpesviruses and human retroviruses. In addition, they include diagnostic virology for the patients of University clinics and hospitals in Northern Bavaria.

The Department was founded in 1972. The first chairman was Prof. Harald zur Hausen until 1977, the almnus scientific director of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg.

Prof Bernhard Fleckenstein has been appointed chairman of the Department in the following year. Since 1996 the Institute has been appointed by the Robert Koch-Institute (Berlin) of the German Federal Ministry of Health as a National Reference Center for Retroviruses.

The new laboratory building of about 3.000 m2 is located in downtown Erlangen, in mid of the botanical garden of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg.
