University of Duisburg-Essen

Bionanotechnology

The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is located in the European region with the highest density of institutions of higher learning. Created in 2003 by the merger of the universities of Duisburg and Essen, the UDE is the youngest university in North Rhine-Westphalia and one of the ten largest universities in Germany.

The Sacca's group is interested in DNA-nanotechnology, an emerging scientific discipline belonging to supramolecular chemistry. This new method allows the realization of DNA objects with well-defined nanometer-sized features. As the spatial coordinates of each atom within the DNA nanoobject can be easily predicted on the basis of the double helical structure, the method offers an extraordinary possibility: to organize matter into a desired spatial arrangement, with a precision of only few nanometers. Indeed, any functionality that can be conjugated with DNA can be placed at a predetermined position of the DNA nanostructure and used as a probe for molecular recognition. This, together with the development of sophisticated technologies, makes DNA nanotechnology a powerful tool for the bottom-up construction of nanomaterials and analysis of biochemical processes at the single-molecule level.
