Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf Institut für Bioorganische Chemie (IBOC)

Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf
Jülich
Employees: 11-50

With about 35000 students, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) is the center of research and education in the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, a federal state of Germany well known for the Rhine-Ruhr area (\\"Ruhrgebiet\\"), the largest economic area in Europe and among Europe’s largest academic hubs. With her five faculties (mathematics and natural sciences, medicine, law, economics, philosophy) Heinrich Heine University promotes close interdisciplinary co-operations on regional, national and international levels. In the tradition of European universities and the spirit of Heinrich Heine, the community of teachers and students offers high-level education in an atmosphere of tolerance, respect for minorities and coexistence across national borders.

The Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (IBOC) is a department of Heinrich Heine University albeit not located in Düsseldorf but on the campus of the renowned Helmholtz research center Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (FZJ) in the triangle between Aachen, Cologne and Düsseldorf. In this, IBOC is embedded in close co-operations with the FZJ institutes IBG-1: Systemic Microbiology and IBG-1: Systems Biotechnology as well as the HHU institute IMET (Molecular Enzyme Technology). Bioorganic Chemistry is a scientific discipline at the junction of biology and chemistry, which can excellently complement each other. In our research we therefore employ chemical methods to address biological problems or biological methods (e.g., biocatalysis) to forge ahead with (bio)chemical synthesis. Moreover, we investigate chemical compounds of living organism, i.e. natural products (“Naturstoffe”).
