Postdoctoral Researcher in Cancer Biology and Radiobiology

We are seeking a highly-motivated Postdoctoral Researcher in Cancer Biology and Radiobiology to join the groups of E. Fokas and F. Greten for the project entitled:
“Exploring the mechanisms of rectal cancer response to (chemo)radiotherapy using organoid models”

The response of rectal cancer to preoperative (chemo)radiotherapy is heterogeneous. There is a need to better understand the determinants of tumor response to improve the clinical outcome. Preclinical radiobiological research in rectal cancer has been limited by mouse models that do not recapitulate the human biology. The Small Animal Radiation Research Platform (SARRP) enables precise image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) in mouse models to facilitate rigorous preclinical radiobiology research. Also, despite a plethora of clinical studies, predictive biomarkers remain elusive in this disease.

Activities and responsibilities

Project proposal
In this project, we will aim to use tumor organoids to investigate the impact the mechanisms that mediate tumor response to radiotherapy. Different endpoints will be assessed using various mouse models of rectal cancer and irradiation with the SARRP. Preclinical findings will be validated with the help of clinical samples from patient tumor biopsies and vice-versa. The results of the present project should provide insights into the mechanisms that define the efficacy of chemoradiotherapy to facilitate development and validation of prediction signatures in rectal cancer. The project strongly aligns with the priorities of the Frankfurt Cancer Institute, the UCT and DKTK Cancer Centre Frankfurt.

Qualification profile

Profile and description
This is a full-time post and is offered for 2 years in the first instance. We are seeking a highly-motivated postdoctoral research with good publication record. The successful candidate will have a PhD in radiobiology, molecular biology, biochemistry related science with knowledge and experience in standard biochemical, molecular biological and tissue culture techniques. Bioinformatics knowledge is desirable. Payment is according to tarif (TV-L E13) for the fixed-term period of the Postdoctoral Research Period (2 years) and will be covered by a grant of the Frankfurt Cancer Institute Frankfurt.
