PhD candidate (m/f/d) in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedicine, Physics, Pharmacy, Molecular Medicine or similar

The Institute of Pharmacology at RWTH Aachen University is looking for a position

PhD candidate (m/f/d) in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedicine, Physics, Pharmacy, Molecular Medicine or similar

funded for three years. Compensation will be according to German EG 13 TV-L (65%).

This position is part of the newly approved IZKF joint research project "Sodium channel pain disorders: From molecular mechanisms to personalised treatment". Within this multidisciplinary project, we want to biochemically characterize the influence of (known and newly discovered) pain-associated mutations in voltage-dependent sodium channels (NaVs) in our subproject P5. NaVs will be purified by affinity chromatography or investigated as GFP fusion proteins with respect to protein expression, stability, plasma membrane expression, homo- and heteromeric assembly and interaction with other proteins.

Activities and responsibilities

  • Cloning of heterologously expressed pain-associated wild-type NaV channels and their mutants and associated proteins and expression in Xenopus laevis oocytes and/or mammalian cells such as HEK293 cells.
  • Characterization of expressed proteins using biochemical methods such as native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and fluorescence analysis, keyword dimerization
  • Development and implementation of concepts in cooperation with colleagues from the research network that address related clinical, electrophysiological and computer-based atomic-structural issues.

Qualification profile

  • Master's degree in Life sciences or equivalent qualification
  • Enjoying molecular biological and biochemical experiments
  • Strong interest in basic research, in particular in the biochemistry and structure of membrane protein
  • High motivation, perseverance, good communication skills in English

We offer

We offer careful induction and continuous intellectual exchange based on many years of experience in the successful biochemical characterization of various membrane proteins including NaVs. The integration into the joint research project results in excellent cooperation and training opportunities at all levels, especially with regard to ion channel function (see projects of Angelika Lampert, Ingo Kurth/ Natja Haag, Ralf Hausmann) and structural predictions (see projects of Jan-Philipp Machtens and Giulia Rossetti).
