PhD Student Position (f/m/d)

Pre-mRNA splicing catalyzed by a large dynamic ribonucleoprotein machine called spliceosome represents a critical step in the regulation of gene expression, contributing to a marked
expansion of proteome diversity and functional complexity in metazoans. In contrast, spliceosome malfunction hallmarks age-associated tissue decline and a wide range of diseases including cancer and neurodegeneration.

Activities and responsibilities

»» To study the mechanisms underlying spliceosome assembly and functions under physiological,
stress and disease conditions in Drosophila and mouse models combining genetics, cell
biology and biochemistry with omic approaches and imaging
»» To investigate what renders different transcripts, cells, and tissues sensitive to aberrant splicing
»» To elucidate how spliceosome malfunction impacts genome stability and contributes to loss of
tissue homeostasis, premature aging and diseases

Qualification profile

»» Master of Science or equivalent in Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics or Biophysics
»» Enthusiastic, creative and motivated to answer exciting biological questions
»» Strong interest in the mechanisms of signaling and regulation of gene expression in
development and disease
»» Good communication skills, fluency in English and sense for a teamwork
»» Strong background in genetics is essential
»» Experience with model organisms (e.g. Drosophila, mouse), imaging techniques, and
knowledge of basic bioinformatic tools are welcome
