2 PhD positions available in Virology and Genome Engineering (E13 TV-L, 50%)

The Witten/Herdecke University is a German University, which was founded in 1982. The Institute of Virology and Microbiology included in the Faculty of Health offers two positions to work on a project entitled “Studying infection biology of the natural diversity of adenoviruses: implications for gene-based medicine”.

Activities and responsibilities

We are looking for two PhD students who are interested in virology and the development of novel recombinant viral vectors for therapeutic approaches.
The goal of our work is to further understand the biology of adenoviruses and to use this information to develop novel viral vectors for therapeutic approaches. Over the recent years, we established an adenovirus library with a broad spectrum of human adenovirus types, which we also plan to extend by novel clinical isolates. Members of this virus library will be further characterized by studying the cellular uptake of these viruses and these viruses will be used to develop novel gene therapeutic vectors as an alternative for the commonly used adenovirus type 5. The final goal is to apply these novel vectors to deliver genetic tools for genome engineering and treatment of genetic diseases.

Qualification profile

The successful applicant should hold a master/diploma degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine or relative subjects. Moreover, the successful PhD candidate should be highly motivated, ambitious and enjoy teamwork. A background in molecular biology, cell biology or virology and microbiology is advantageous.

You will have the opportunity to join the Institute of Virology and Microbiology at the Witten/Herdecke University in Witten which is located in close proximity to Dortmund and Bochum. The position is currently open for three years (E13 TV-L, 50%) to fulfil the PhD training.
You will have the chance to learn the most advanced concepts and technologies around basic virology, molecular medicine and vector technology. The experimental portfolio includes methods in molecular biology including complex genome engineering techniques, in vitro experiments and virus amplification procedures.
