Doktorand (m/w) in Immunologie, Boston University, USA / Universitaetsmedizin Mainz

The Boston University Pulmonary Center, Experimental Research Laboratory of PD Dr. med. Bosmann is recruiting PhD students (Doktorand m/w) for projects on infection-associated immunology.

We currently have research laboratories at two locations, the Boston University Medical Campus, Boston, USA and the Universitätsmedizin Mainz of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany. We are looking for outstanding PhD candidates with a strong research career focus, who are among the best 5% of students in their class. The majority of training time will be at Boston University, while a PhD degree or Dr. rer. nat. could be awarded by the University of Mainz.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and sepsis are life-threatening complications of microbial infections with profound disturbances of the immune system. In the current absence of definitive treatment options, ARDS and sepsis represent an enormous problem for health systems worldwide. Our laboratory is dedicated to obtain a better mechanistic understanding of the molecular processes during the pathogenesis of these inflammatory diseases. Several novel transgenic mouse strains generated by our laboratory will be available.

We are looking for highly motivated individuals to promote our basic and translational research. Special areas of interest are the role of novel pathogen-associated molecular patterns (e.g. polyphosphates), host-pathogen interactions, neutrophils, macrophages, cytokines (e.g. IL-27), complement (e.g. C5aRs) and related signaling pathways. The projects will be tailored to meet the individual qualifications and interests of the PhD student. For example, the nature and extent of molecular biology techniques, immunology methods, bioinformatics or a focus on surgical mouse models can be discussed with the applicant.

The projects will involve a broad spectrum of immunology methods together with massive parallel sequencing (bulk RNA-Seq, single-cell RNA-Seq) including data analysis. Boston University houses a newly established Single Cell Core Facility. Another area of interest is genome editing by RNA-guided nucleases (e.g. CRISPR-Cas9). The research strongholds at Boston University include a Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM) and the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL).
