Ph.D. Position to Study Nuclear mRNA Packaging as part of an ERC-Funded Project

We are looking for highly motivated Ph.D. students to work on the ERC-funded project “Nuclear mRNA Packaging and mRNP Architecture” beginning as soon as possible. Already during transcription by RNA polymerase II the synthesized mRNA is bound by nuclear RNA-binding proteins and packaged into a messenger ribonucleoprotein particle (mRNP). This process is of prime importance for correct gene expression as it is necessary for stability and nuclear export of the mRNA and even determines cytoplasmic steps such as translation and mRNA degradation. In addition, defects in mRNP packaging lead to diseases. However, the regulation of mRNA packaging and nuclear mRNA export are not known, and, thus, will be elucidated in this project.

Qualification profile

Applicants should possess a strong research background in biochemistry and molecular biology and an M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics or a similar field. Specific knowledge in RNA biology and/or structural biology is of advantage.
