PhD Fellowship for Life Scientist

The Institute of Physiology and Pathophysiology, Division of Cardiovascular Physiology, Heidelberg University, offers the opportunity to participate in a research project with focus on the prevention of heart failure.
PhD Fellowship for Life Scientist
Cardiac disease is a prevalent and progressive condition eventually leading to heart failure. Novel therapies to prevent this outcome are highly sought after. Recent studies show that a severe disturbance in protein homoeostasis and correspondent dysregulation of the protein degradation machinery is evident in cardiac remodeling and heart failure (1). We have identified three mechanisms regulating protein homeostasis in the heart, which impact disease progression (2). Aim of the PhD project is to study molecular targets of these mechanisms via targeted approaches, proteomics and bioinformatics (3). We further offer the opportunity to test the impact of validated targets on cardiac physiology and pathophysiology.

Current methods of protein biochemistry and proteomics, including affinity-based purification, two-dimensional electrophoresis, mass spectrometry; Target validation:  e.g. immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, native electrophoresis, Western Blotting, enzyme assays; Physiology & pathophysiology: in vitro/in vivo models of cardiac disease, protein inhibition/overexpression, echocardiography, etc.

  • Local and national members of the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), Heidelberg University.
  • National and international members of the research consortium on 'Proteotoxicity: an unappreciated mechanism of heart disease and its potential for novel therapeutics'.
  • Members of NHLBI Proteomics centers and the International Consortium of Cardiovascular Proteome Biology.

We are looking for a young investigator who is genuinely interested in basic research with future clinical application. You have a Master’s degree in Life Sciences or equivalent and ideally good experience in one or more of the methods that will be utilized. If you have an analytical mind and enjoy developing your own experiments based on expertise and current literature into exciting discoveries, you will find excellent support and mentorship in our scientific network. Previous training in protein biochemistry, cell biology or physiology is preferential, but not essential. A strong desire to advance your knowledge and a quick grasp of science is more important to us.
