PhD position in Bioinformatics (TV-L E13, 65%)


The Institute of Human Genetics is one of Germany’s leading centers in the identification of genetic risk factors for multifactorial disorders. It provides a unique scientific environment for researchers, combining both expertise in the analyses and interpretation of genomic data and providing access to state-of the art high-throughput genomic technologie (microarrays, next-and third generation-sequencing, bioinformatics).

The PhD project is part of the multidisciplinary, multicenter research project “Gut-Brain Cross-Disease Map (GB-XMAP): A systems methodology to assess the risk of gut-brain cross-diseases by characterizing expressional changes”, financed through the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the context of the e:Med program. Within GB-XMAP a strong alliance with the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology in Kiel and the Department of Systems Biology and Bioinformatics in Rostock will be formed.
The main goal of the PhD project is to estimate the genetically regulated component of expression of potential risk genes from common inflammatory bowel diseases and schizophrenia GWAS loci for a wide range of tissues and cell types by means of common inflammatory bowel diseases expression imputation followed by transcriptome-wide association analysis (TWAS) in several large case-control populations.

The position starts 1 February 2018 or later and is for a period of 3 years with the possibility of an extension.

Your responsibilities will include:eloping, running and maintaining analysis pipelines
  • Preparation of expression data from Microarrays and NGS
  • Comprehensive evaluation and comparison of publicly available machine learning programs for in silico gene expression imputation GWAS genotype/summarylevel and whole-transcriptome data
  • Modelling and analysis of the gutbrain cross-disease map
  • Evaluation of the pipelines using different molecular genetic technologies
Minimum qualifications:
  • MSc in Bioinformatics or equivalent expertise in a relevant subject area (e.g. computer sciences, mathematics, genetics /genomics, or similar)
  • Solid programming skills (e.g. in R, Python, Perl)
  • Basic knowledge in molecular biology
  • Fluency in English, Basic knowledge of German
We offer an excellent multidisciplinary team-oriented research environment with individual development opportunities. The PhD position will be integrated into the THEME PhD Program of the University of Bonn Medical School. We offer supportive mentoring and a well-equipped laboratory. Successful candidates will be awarded a PhD.
