PhD Position: Proteome dynamics during exposure to mechanical stress

We are seeking a dedicated and creative PhD student for our protease degradomics and protein mass spectrometry team at ZEA-3 (Analytics) for a collaborative project with ICS-7 (Biomechanics) within the framework of the newly established DFG research unit FOR2743 “Mechanical Stress Protection”. Mechanical stress affects almost every cell in the human body, but the molecular mechanisms allowing cells to respond and adapt to these forces are still incompletely understood. This project aims to obtain a systems-level understanding of protein fate in cells exposed to controlled mechanical stress conditions, including changes in protein modifications, interactions, stability and turnover.

Your tasks:
  • Global proteome analysis, including sample preparation, data acquisition and evaluation.
  • Adaptation and development of protocols for proteome turnover measurements.
  • Contribution to mass spectrometry instrument operation and maintenance.
  • Cell biological experiments, including cell culture and application of mechanical stress.
Your profile:
  • Master´s degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology or a related field with a good final grade (equivalent to grade 2.0 or better in the German grade system).
  • Strong experience in life science laboratory skills (molecular & cellular biology, biochemistry).
  • Curious, motivated, reliable, aptitude for self-organized/independent work.
  • Strong communication skills in English (fluent).
  • Ideally previous hands-on experience in proteomics and/or proteomics data analysis.
