2 PhD Position in Cardiovascular Research

The International Research Training Group 1902 located at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany is seeking for

2 highly motivated PhD students (f/m)
key issue: cardiovascular research,
in the project P7 Prof. Fischer and P12 Prof. Grandoch.
starting as soon as possible.

Our program:
The IRTG 1902 (www.irtg1902.hhu.de) is a DFG funded international research program which aims to advance cooperative international research and learning of doctoral students in medicine and natural sciences in the context of tightly linked, cooperative research projects and an interdisciplinary training program in a cooperation of the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany and the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA. We offer graduate student training in the framework of 11 tandem projects which are run by a German and an American PI. The international collaboration involves a six month research phase at the partner university.

Our research:
The central research idea of the IRTG 1902 is the investigation of functional and molecular mechanisms underlying intra- and inter-organ communication as a means to understand normal and pathological cell and organ function. Research topics include cytokine signaling, extracellular matrix function, angiogenesis, vascular function and interactions of heart, kidney, skeletal muscle and adipose tissue in heart failure.

The project P7
Prof. Dr. Jens W. Fischer will investigate the role of the extracellular matrix component hyaluronic acid for the smooth muscle cell and immune response in atherosclerosis.

The project P12
Prof. Dr. Maria Grandoch will analyze how Inhibitor of differentiation (Id)-3 modulates the hyaluronan-rich matrix in obesity-associated adipose tissue inflammation.

Your qualifications:
We are seeking to recruit highly qualified, energetic and dynamic graduate students holding a M.Sc. degree. We need open-minded candidates with a strong biology background and experiences in general molecular biology. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are mandatory.

Terms of salary and employment:
The graduate students will be employed at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany. PhD positions (65% TV-L E13) are funded for three years by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (www.dfg.de).
