IMPRS PhD Position on Computational Genetics

IMPRS PhD Position on Computational Genetics

The Department of Comparative Development and Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) in Cologne invites applications for a PhD position in the field of Computational Genetics.

High quality genome assembly is crucial for many applications, including comparative studies of trait diversity. Our previous comparative study of C. hirsuta and A. thaliana highlighted the important role of tandem gene duplications in trait diversity, indicating that comparative genomics enables the identification of trait associated genes. The objective of this project is to leverage comparative analysis of high throughput sequencing (HTS) datasets (Illumina, PacBio and Nanopore) from closely related cruciferous plants with the aim to understand the genomic underpinnings of trait diversity. The successful candidates will work on the genome assembly and transcriptome comparison among multiple cruciferous species, based in the bioinformatics group of Dr. Xiangchao Gan (http://www.mpipz.mpg.de/gan). The work will also contribute to larger efforts towards understanding the genetic basis for interspecific regulation of trait diversity in collaboration with the Tsiantis group in the Department of Comparative Development and Genetics in the MPIPZ (http://www.mpipz.mpg.de/226344/tsiantis-dpt). The student will be trained within the framework of International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS, https://www.mpg.de/en/imprs)
We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated candidate with strong computational background. Experience in programming is essential. Experience in bioinformatics and handling large datasets will be considered a plus but is not essential. Good working knowledge of English is expected.
Our offer
We offer a friendly, multi-disciplinary environment with the opportunity to acquire skills in different aspects of computational genetics.
Payment / Position
The position is funded for 3 years and available as of November 1, 2016. Selected candidates will be invited for interview. Salary and working hours for this fulltime position are in accordance with the funding guidelines of the Max Planck Society for junior scientists. The salary is 50 % of E13 TVöD-Bund. The Max-Planck society is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
Your application
Applications including a letter of motivation, CV, complete publication list and contact details for at least two referees should be sent as a single PDF file via e-mail to Xiangchao Gan (gan@mpipz.mpg.de). The search will continue until a suitable candidate is identified. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interview.
