PhD Position

 Universität Heidelberg  Heidelberg
Within the context of the collaborative research centre SFB 1036 Cellular Surveillance and Damage Response the research group Cell Chemistry (Prof. Dr. S. Strahl) at the Centre for Organismal Studies (COS) Heidelberg, University of Heidelberg, Germany, is offering a position for
a PhD Student (code number 01-2016STR)
for an initial time period of 3 years. Payment will be according to the German TV-L13 (part-time).
The position is available from now on.
Our laboratory is interested in various aspects of glycobiology in eukaryotic organisms with a main focus on O-mannosylation, an evolutionarily conserved, essential protein modification with immense impact on a variety of cellular processes. In the frame of SFB 1036 we are studying the function of O-mannosylation for protein quality control in the endoplasmic reticulum. A methodological focus of the current PhD project will be mass spectrometry-based methods to study (glyco)proteomics (Neubert et al. (2016) Mol Cell Proteomics15).
You will join a well-funded international research team in an outstanding scientific environment. Your project will be embedded in a collaborative research centre with numerous synergies, including inter alia groups from the Center for Molecular Biology (ZMBH) and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). You will have access to several high-end core facilities (Mass Spectrometry & Proteomics, Electron Microscopy, Nikon Imaging Centre, FACS, Deep Sequencing).
Your profile:
Applicants should hold an excellent Master degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Cell Biology or comparable topics. The successful candidate should have a very high level of motivation to perform creative basic research. Candidates should be true team players, have good communication skills and good knowledge of the English language. Experience in mass spectrometry, molecular biology, protein biochemistry and/or glycobiology is preferred.
Strong background in mass spectrometry, membrane- and glycoproteins are preferred. Background in yeast molecular biology and genetics is also a plus. The position will require attention to detail, strong skills in experimental design and troubleshooting, and an ability to pursue research projects independently.

How to apply:
Applications including a CV, a brief statement (one side maximum) of current and future research plans, certificates and details of at least one academic referee, should be submitted via e-mail (one single PDF file) to
or by mail.

Please understand that received application materials will not be returned.
