The Leibniz Research Centre for Working Environment and Human Factors (IfADo) at the University of Dortmund integrates both basic and applied science in its mission to understand human health and disease. We have scientists from different academic backgrounds working together to address specific questions in the areas of liver and metabolic diseases, cancer development and progression, stress and aging. Consequently, the successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary network of scientists, with ongoing collaborations with both national and international labs. We provide state-of-the-art instrumentation and techniques, which includes a strong imaging core, animal facility, flow cytometry facility, molecular biology labs, and analytical chemistry labs, together with ongoing collaborations for genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and statistical analyses.

PhD student

The position is offered within a newly DFG funded Project “Characterising a role for EDI3 in metastasis in vivo” and is funded for 3 years.
Project description:
Our group focuses on understanding proteins involved in lipid and choline metabolism, with consequences in cancer and liver disease. Our early work led to the identification of a protein we named EDI3 (GPCPD1; GDE5), which we subsequently showed to be involved in both choline and glycerophospholipid metabolism. High EDI3 was found to be associated with metastasis and worse prognosis in endometrial cancer, and in vitro analyses indicated a role in cell migration, adhesion and spreading. Since most of the work thus far has focused on studying EDI3 in vitro, the next step and the goal of the proposed project is to investigate the role of EDI3 in tumour growth and metastasis in vivo, using different models of cancer in mice. To achieve this, cell models will be created where EDI3 levels are stably and conditionally altered, which will be used to produce both spontaneous and orthotopic models of cancer in mice. Additionally, there is still much to be discovered with regard to EDI3 function and regulation. Therefore, further basic characterization of EDI3 will be performed to understand its regulation and function in cells. A detailed description of the project is available upon request.


We are looking for a highly talented and motivated doctoral candidate with considerable experience in cell and molecular biology. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently with human cell culture, in vitro biochemical and molecular biological techniques, and have experience or be willing to work with animals. High proficiency in spoken and written English including scientific writing will be preferred. The candidate would have successfully completed a Master’s degree or diploma/state examination in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Pharmacy or a related discipline with an excellent closing grade. The enthusiastic and ambitious candidate should be able to work independently and responsibly, and be willing to establish new techniques/technologies. Selection will be made on personal ability and previous experience in laboratory work.
The successful candidate will be supported throughout the thesis work, be included into a group regularly publishing in high ranking journals, integrated into international research networks, and will be able to present their work at national and international meetings.
