PhD position in DNA repair and genome stability

The group of Prof. Dr. Katrin Paeschke (www.paeschelab.de) is situated at the University Bonn in the medical faculty. the research in the Paeschke lab focuses on secondary DNA or RNA strucutres and their impact on DNA replication, DNA repair and immunology.

Activities and responsibilities

The lab of Prof. Dr. Katrin Paeschke (Laboratory of nucleic acids structures and repair/ www.paeschkelab.de) is looking for a highly motivated and determined candidate for a PhD position. The position is available as soon as possible. The initial contract will be for three years, and will be paid by a prestigious ERC Stg Grant.

The PhD student will elucidate the impact of G-quadruplex DNA structures on DNA repair processes and genome stability. Recently, it was shown that G-quadruplex structures can form within DNA and RNA and that specific proteins contribute to their regulation. We identified a specific protein in yeast that stabilize G4 structures and by this influence TLS and NER. In the project, he/she will shed light on the question if and how G4 structures support or alternate DNA repair and which DNA breaks are generated due to formation of these alternate structures. He/She will use different genome wide, biochemical and molecular biological techniques in S. cerevisiaeand human tissue culture cells. See Paeschke et al 2011 Cell, Paeschke et al 2013 Nature, Wanzek et al 2017 NAR or Sauer & Paeschke 2017 for more information on the work in the Paeschke lab.

Qualification profile

  • Strong interest in genome stability, DNA replication and repair
  • M.Sc. in bio-molecular sciences, medical biology or related area
  • Inquisitive and independent research attitude
  • Beneficial: experience in molecular biology, biochemistry or genome wide analysis

Benefits

We also offer a salary according to German salary scale TV-L EG 13 65% and the possibility to acquire a Jobticket for transportation as well as participation in the private retirement fund program VBL for state employed personnel.
The UKB is an equal opportunity employer.
