PhD Position in Life Sciences

 IRTG 1830  Homburg
The International Research Training Group – Complex Membrane Proteins in Cellular Development and Disease (IRTG 1830) - jointly run by the University of Kaiserslautern (Germany), Saarland University (Germany) and the University of Alberta (Canada) - offers integrative approaches to biomedical research with a strong emphasis on developmental processes and diseases. The program is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
Within the IRTG 1830, the following PhD Position is available in the lab of Prof. Dr. Jutta Engel (Center for Integrative Physiology and Molecular Medicine and Dept. of Biophysics, Hearing Research, Faculty of Medicine, Saarland University, Homburg):
Role of the Na+-activated K+ channel ‘Slack’ for development and function of the mammalian cochlea
Our group is interested in the roles of Ca2+ and K+ channels for hair cells and auditory neurons of the cochlea. Inner hair cells transform sound stimuli into transmitter release, which results in neuronal activation. In the phase of final differentiation, just before the onset of hearing, inner hair cells change their composition of ion channels and switch their electrical behaviour. In this project, the role of the Na+-activated K+ channel ‘Slack’ for development and function of inner hair cells and auditory neurons will be analysed. We will employ electrophysiology (patch clamp), immunohistochemistry, transcript analysis, culture of primary neurons, and hearing measurements. We are looking for a PhD student interested in neuroscience, sensory physiology and molecular medicine.

The program includes a 6-months stay in a lab of our Canadian partners and offers excellent scientific and transferable skills training at all participating locations. The program language is English and there are no tuition fees. The successful candidate will receive a contract (65% TVL13), as well as support with administrative matters, accommodation, visas etc. We invite applications from highly qualified and motivated students of any nationality and we are looking forward to your application for the PhD fellowship in our group.
How to apply:
Applications for the 3-year PhD program can be submitted only via our online system with immediate effect. For further information and online application go to www.irtg1830.com

Über IRTG 1830

Dysfunction of membrane proteins and of protein compartmentalization can seriously compromise normal functioning of cells and organs, and has been implicated in detrimental diseases. Moreover, altered activity of many membrane proteins causes dramatic effects on developmental and cellular adaptation processes in animal and plant cells. The IRTG 1830 aims to investigate selected membrane...
