The Leibniz Institute on Aging - Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) is a research institute of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Association, which is financed by the Federal State of Thuringia and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research with 50% each. The main focus of research is to delineate basic molecular mechanisms and its consequences for the development of dysfunctions and aging-related diseases. Around 350 employees work and conduct research at the FLI, with international employees from over 40 nations.

Within the Leibniz Graduate School on Aging in Jena the Membrane Trafficking Group invites applications for a  PhD student position (TV-L E13/2).

The FLI provides an international and dynamic research environment with highly interacting groups. Our group is working on intracellular transport mechanisms, with a focus on membrane proteins of the early secretory pathway. The thesis project will be on molecular mechanisms of axonopathy-causing mutations in ER-shaping proteins.

Qualification profile

We are looking for motivated students who like to work on a clinically relevant cell biological project. You will use a variety of different methods including cloning and expression of fusion proteins, immunofluorescence microscopy including super resolution microscopy, live-cell microscopy, biochemistry (Western Blot, immunoprecipitation) and more. As model system you will use cultured cell lines and primary neuronal cultures. Candidates are expected to have a strong background in biochemistry or cell biology or neurobiology. Experience in at least some of the mentioned methods is highly desirable.

A position in a well-equipped research group of a high quality institute for age research, which harbors several state-of-the-art facilities. Our work is embedded in the Beutenberg Campus, an interdisciplinary base for innovative research.
The PhD position will be integrated in our Leibniz Graduate School on Aging and Age Related Diseases
The contract conditions and the salary will be according to the collective labor agreement for public service employees of the Federal State of Germany (TV-L E13 50-65%).
