Postdoc Position

The Leibniz Institute on Aging - Fritz Lipmann Institute e.V. (FLI) is a research institute, which has the objective of understanding the molecular mechanisms of aging. Thereby we would like to contribute to healthy aging in humans. Various animal models (e.g. mice and fish) help us to generate relevant knowledge on the causes and the mechanisms of age-associated diseases and to investigate new therapeutic approaches. Postdoc Position

Research focus of the lab/Research projects: The research group of Prof. Heinrich Jasper is engaged in investigating fundamental mechanisms of stem cell aging and their consequences for tissue homeostasis. Using Drosophila as a model system, the group has characterized the effects of stress signaling on intestinal stem cell function and has established that age-related deregulation of stem cell proliferation is caused by changes in the immune environment of the intestinal epithelium. The group has characterized the interaction between age-related changes in the commensal microbiome and the age-related acquisition of epithelial dysplasia, an interaction that promotes mortality in aging animals. Using genetic interventions that limit immune-senescence, that promote commensal homeostasis, or that limit intestinal stem cell proliferation, the group has shown that increasing homeostasis of the gut is sufficient to extend lifespan of flies. The group has further studied fundamental mechanisms of intestinal stem cell regulation, discovering a central role for Calcium signaling in the integration of multiple stress, growth factor, and nutrient signals in stem cells. Current work is exploring this regulation in more detail and is translating the findings obtained in the fly system to the mouse, focusing on the tracheal epithelium as a model system.
Profile of the Candidate / Requirements:
Creative, self-motivated candidates with an interest in developing an independent research program that will lead to a faculty position at a university or research institution are preferred. Requirements include:
  • Successful degree in Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry, and PhD in a relevant field
  • highly self-motivated with a genuine interest in developmental biology and/or aging
  • good team-working capabilities
  • know-how in molecular biology and microscopy
  • experience in animal work, transgenesis, tissue processing, in situ hybridization
We offer:
  • a position in a well-equipped research group of a high quality institute for age research, which harbors several state-of-the-art facilities. Our work is embedded in the Beutenberg Campus, an interdisciplinary base for innovative research.
  • a position integrated in the FLI PostDoc Network. The Network promotes interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • a contract which is limited to two years initially. The contract conditions and the salary will be according to the collective labor agreement for public service employees of the federal states of Germany (TV-L E13).
