Obesity is a worldwide epidemic and one of the most serious health concerns. Defined as an excess adiposity, obesity has major health consequences, like cardiovascular complications, diabetes, NASH, gastrointestinal, respiratory, musculoskeletal, neurological disorders. In addition, certain cancers are associated with obesity. The understanding of obesity as a chronic disease involves the control of appetite and satiety, e.g. via communication of gut hormones and master regulators with the brain including pathologic effects on other organs, in particular the adipose tissue.

As a Laboratory Head in Obesity Research you combine a strong pharma industry background with profound and broad scientific expertise in Obesity, thereby contributing and influencing portfolio decisions in the research phase and beyond.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • In your new role you will lead a highly motivated and experienced team as head of an in vitro research laboratory (responsible for 2-4 technicians) with the focus to support our obesity pipeline.
  • With your expertise you will act as a research project leader of drug discovery projects in close collaborations with other disciplines, including target discovery research, medicinal chemistry, NBE discovery and drug discovery science.
  • You will contribute to the development of new project ideas targeting energy/food intake and energy expenditure and advancing the projects to the “Start of Development” milestone. This includes target validation, assay development, biological profiling of lead structures and characterization of development candidates, preclinical biomarker concept, support planning of in vivo preclinical animal model studies etc.
  • You will lead and participate in collaborations with academia to drive the science.


  • PhD degree in biology, biochemistry or molecular pharmacology, pharmacy or MD with relevant post-doc experience or an equivalent qualification
  • Good knowledge in molecular pharmacological techniques and several years of experience in pharmacology, molecular biology, and cell biology and experience in pharmaceutical industry is required
  • You are experienced with diverse in vitro / ex vivo techniques, in particular cell systems, incl human primary cells and differentiation of cell lines and able to develop/apply new cell-based, biochemical, molecular-biology assays
  • Excellent oral communication skills as well as fluency in spoken and written English
  • Over and above you are a team player, bring with you excellent sense of responsibility, and high competence in personnel management
  • Demonstrated track record by publications in scientific journals
  • You are characterized by an independent working attitude, flexibility as well as innovative thinking and problem solving
