2 PhD positions in neurobiology

2 PhD student positions in Düsseldorf and Magdeburg
Two PhD positions (TV-L E13/2 funded for three years by BMBF within the European CircProt consortium) are available in the group of Prof. Dr. K. Gottmann. The international CircProt consortium aims to investigate the protective potential of BDNF related plasticity mechanisms for therapeutic treatment of Alzheimer´s and Huntington´s disease.
1) The first position will be based at the Institute of Neuro- and Sensory Physiology of the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, Germany. The project will focus on the essential role of synaptic adhesion molecules e.g. N-cadherin in stabilizing central glutamatergic synapses. We further want to elucidate how BDNF regulates the N-cadherin adhesion system leading to enhanced synapse stability. State-of-the-art electrophysiological (patch clamp), fluorescence imaging (super-resolution), and molecular (overexpression, conditional knockout) methods will be employed.
2) The second position will be part of a close collaboration with Prof. Dr. V. Leßmann at the Institute of Physiology, Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, Germany and will be based in Magdeburg. The project focuses on the analysis of spines in mouse models of neurodegenerative diseases e.g. Alzheimer´s. The effects of BDNF expression level and of BDNF signaling enhancing drugs on spine pathologies will be investigated with an array of spine visualization and analysis technologies.
We offer cutting-edge projects, intensive training in state-of-the-art techniques, the opportunity to attend national and international meetings, and dedicated supervision by our experienced team.
We are looking for candidates with enthusiasm for research in cellular neurobiology and an ambitious style of working. A solid background in molecular and cellular neuroscience is expected. The ideal candidates should have hands-on experience in electrophysiology and/or high-end fluorescence imaging including proficiency in data analysis. A good command of English is required in our international working environment.
Applicants should hold a Master degree in Biology, Neuroscience or a related field and should send a brief letter of motivation, their CV, a summary of their Master thesis, Master certificate, and two letters of reference (or contact info of two referees) via email to Prof. Dr. K. Gottmann (kurt.gottmann@uni-duesseldorf.de). Only full applications will be considered. Candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
