We are a research group at the Department of Biomedicine at the University and University Hospital Basel. Our Department offers a vivid and international scientific environment fostering exchange between scientists and Core Facilities assisting with high-end research techniques.
Our research group Stem Cells & Hematopoiesis focuses on translational research in hematopoieisis, leukemia and other cancers. We especially investigate stemness and novel strategies for targeting cancer stem cells (see also our recent publication by Paczulla, .., Lengerke. Nature, 2019).

Activities and responsibilities

The candidate is expected to complete a research project under my supervision. She/he will receive further assistance from my research group and will be co-supervised by one of the senior scientists in our team. She/he will be encouraged to present her/his data at scientific conferences and will have to complete a doctoral thesis and exam.

Qualification profile

We seek a highly motivated PhD candidate (100%, start upon arrangement) with strong interest in cancer and stem cell research to join our projects investigating stemness mechanisms in leukemia. The applicant is expected to have a background and/or interest in cell/molecular biology. Expertise with experimentation in mice or flow cytometry are considered a plus. Applicants with background in other disciplines (e.g. immunology, metabolism) interested in exploring our research field are also invited to apply.

We offer

We use various state of the art molecular, biochemical and functional assays of cell lines and primary cells as well as in vivo mouse and zebrafish models to answer our research questions. Our group currentlc comprises two senior scientists, two graduate students, one master student and one technician.
We would like to disclose that our research group might relocate to the University of Tuebingen (Germany) within the next one or two years. We are therefore specifically looking for applicants that would be willing to work in both places and, in case of a move, would be interested in joining the lab also in Tübingen.
