The lab of Prof. Alexander Buchberger at the Biocenter, University of Würzburg, Germany, invites applications for a
PhD Student Position in Molecular Cell Biology

starting from August 1st, 2018. The position is funded by the Research Training Group 2243 "Understanding Ubiquitylation: From Molecular Mechanisms to Disease" and is available for 3 years. Payment is based on the German federal public service scale TV-L.

Research in the Buchberger lab is focused on elucidating the role of the chaperone-like ATPase p97/VCP in the ubiquitin proteasome system. The project for the announced position is aimed at uncovering the mechanisms underlying formation and clearance of stress granules – see our recent publication in Molecular Cell for further information (Turakhiya et al., Mol Cell 2018, doi.org/10.1016/j.molcel.2018.04.021). Work will cover a broad range of state-of-the-art methods in molecular cell biology and protein biochemistry. The research project is complemented by seminars, courses, hands-on workshops, writing and presentation training as well as career development opportunities offered jointly by the Research Training Group 2243 and the University of Würzburg Graduate School of Life Sciences.

We are seeking a highly qualified, enthusiastic student holding a M.Sc. or equivalent degree with a background in Molecular Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Biochemistry, or a related field. The ideal candidate has a solid training in cell biology and biochemistry, high self-motivation, good communication skills and the ability to work in a team. Applicants must be proficient in oral and written English.
