PhD student

IPK Gatersleben is a large, internationally recognized centre of plant research that addresses problems of modern biology with an emphasis on crop plants. Our scientific expertise integrates a broad diversity of disciplines to elucidate the mechanisms underlying processes of plant development, metabolism, and interactions with the environment. Our research aims at the generation of fundamental knowledge and the development of genetic and biotechnological tools to spur the knowledge-based use of plant-genetic resources to optimize a variety of crop traits. Frequently, this involves co-operation with various national and international universities as well as public-private partnerships.
For the research group Domestication Genomics we are looking for a
PhD student
Employment could start from November 1st, 2015 or later for a duration of 36 months.
The research group Domestication Genomics studies domestication and adaptation processes and their interaction with genetic diversity in the cereal crops barley, wheat and rye and their wild progenitors by analyzing comprehensive sequence datasets in the context of newly developed genomic sequence and mapping resources.
Your tasks:
You will collect and analyze high-throughput sequencing data of the transcriptomes of different cultivated and wild accessions of barley hosted at the IPK genebank and of crosses between them. You will apply custom sequence analysis pipelines to understand the effects of the domestication process on gene regulatory architecture and their interplay with genetic diversity.  You will present your results at conferences and in scientific journals.
Your qualification:
You have a Master degree in biology, bioinformatics, biology or related disciplines. Skills in one of the fields molecular biology, bioinformatics or plant science are essential. Ideally, you have practical experience in the wet-lab and a basic knowledge of bioinformatics and are willing to extend your computational skills.
If you need further information, feel free to contact Dr. Martin Mascher. You reach him via email mascher@ipk-gatersleben.de or phone +49 (0) 39482 5243.
