Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) for the study of determinants of severe infections with the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

For the Institute for Experimental Virology at TWINCORE - Center for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research in Hannover (Director: Prof. Thomas Pietschmann) we are recruiting a

Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) for the study of determinants of severe infections with the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

to support our international and interdisciplinary team.

Activities and responsibilities

The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most frequent cause of severe respiratory tract infections in infants. Approximately 1 % of infections have a severe course, but risk factors are not well characterized. By using genome-wide exome sequencing we were able to associate genetic variants in 84 genes with severity of disease progression. The aim of this project is to characterize the influence of selected genes on RSV infection and its pathophysiology at the molecular level. In the future, this information will be used for individualized risk assessment and tailored prevention.

This project makes use of a RSV reverse genetic system, primary clinical RSV isolates, primary human lung cells as well as a RSV small animal model. We apply deep sequencing technology, virological and cell biological techniques, Cas9 genome editing and metabolome studies. In our international network of collaborators, we join forces across disciplines with bioinformaticians, mathematicians and drug researchers.

You can expect:
  • Challenging and diverse tasks in a motivated team
  • Basic research, tightly connected to application
  • Numerous national and international opportunities for scientific cooperation
  • Extensive possibilities for advanced training
  • Flexible working hours

Qualification profile

  • Graduate degree in Life Sciences, Human or Veterinary Medicine
  • PhD degree in virology or immunology
  • Previous experience in the field of molecular virology of minus strand RNA viruses
  • Knowledge of cell biology and basic knowledge in statistics and bioinformatics are expected
  • Expertise in RSV research and experience with animal experiments are advantageous
  • Willingness to work with animals is required
  • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing is of advantage

We offer

HZI is an equal opportunities employer. Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates. The positon is suitable for part time.
