PhD Position

One PhD position is now available at the Clemens-Schöpf-Institute for Organic and Biochemistry (Darmstadt, Germany) for an enthusiastic, highly-motivated, hardworking individual to work on the research in our laboratory within the State of Hessen's LOEWE Program for Scientific and Economic Excellence “iNAPO” (Ion-conducting Nanopores) project on the topic entitled “Chemical Synthesis of Protein Nanopores on the Basis of Ion Channels and Pore-forming Peptides”.
Applicants should have a Diploma or Master degree in Chemistry, Biomolecular engineering, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or Pharmacy. We are seeking for highly motivated people wishing to pursue their career in science with a competitive CV (Master-Thesis score: “sehr gut” in the German score system), regular period of study, capacity for team working and ability to perform independent work. Applicant should have an integrative and cooperative personality with enthusiasm for actively participating in “iNAPO” network with very good communication and writing skills (English).
Project field
In living organisms the transport of ions is performed by ion channels and transporters. Basic principles of the working mechanism and the reason for their efficiency/high selectivity are good understood to date. This information will help us to develop ion-selective pores for various technical applications in biophysical, biochemical and medical fields. Within the project we will construct in analogy to biological systems the membrane protein channels. In combination with the polymeric support/lipids we will use the advantageous functions of membrane proteins to develop robust ion-conducting pores. The selected candidate will chemically synthesize and modify membrane proteins to achieve the project goal. The project is integrated into the highly collaborative research environment at the TU Darmstadt comprising experts from biology, chemistry, physics, material science and electrical engineering

  • Analytical and preparative HPLC, Mass spectrometry (ESI-MS and MALDI-TOF MS)
  • NMR and CD spectroscopy
  • Computational structural biology
