The working group on Quaternary Geology at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy of the University of Cologne invites applications for

2 PhD-Student Position in Paleolimnology

with a weekly working time of 19,92 hours (50%  position). The initial contract is limited for 3 years. Starting earliest October 01, 2016. The salary is based on the German E13 TV-L scale if terms and conditions under collective bargaining law are fulfilled.

The positions are funded for 3 years, starting earliest October 1, 2016. They will be embedded in the Graduate School of Geosciences (GSGS) of the University of Cologne (for details see http://www.geosciences.uni-koeln.de/gsgs.html). Salary and benefits will be according to German Public Service Sector salary group TV-L 13, part time 19,92 hours per week.

The PhD shall address open science questions in the running research projects, relying on lake sediment cores existing or still to be recovered. A wide range of analytical facilities is available in the working group, covering areas from grain sizes, grain shapes, and MSC logging, via element analyses and XRF scanning, to microfossils and paleomagnetic dating. Additional techniques, if needed, can be used in other labs at the institute. A decision on the regional, temporal and scientific focal points shall be made based upon the interests and skills of the successful candidates.

The PhD students will conduct the necessary laboratory analyses on the sediment sequences retrieved, partly supported by student assistants, play a leading role in the interpretation of the data obtained, and contribute to the publication of the results in collaboration with other project members that have provided significant input. The PhD thesis can be submitted in German or English, both as a monograph or as a collection of peer-reviewed papers, which are merged by an extended introduction and synthesis. A teaching load of 2 hours per week, preferably fulfilled by contributions to seminars or lab courses, is integral part of the position.

We are looking for highly motivated, team-oriented candidates with a profound background in paleolimnology, sedimentology, and/or Quaternary geology. Candidates should hold a Diploma or M.Sc. in a related field (e.g., Geosciences, Geology, Physical Geography). Analytical experience and the willingness to learn and apply advanced instrumental analytical techniques is essential. We expect good English language skills. Applicants with limited knowledge of German will be supported to develop proficiency in the language within the first years.
The University of Cologne is an equal opportunities employer. Applications of women are thus especially encouraged; applications of disabled persons will be given preferential treatment to those of other candidates with equal qualifications.

Please send your application (one pdf file), including motivation and interests, CV, and copies of certificates by email to Prof. Dr. Martin Melles (mmelles@uni-koeln.de) by August 15, 2016.
