PhD candidate in Software Defined Architecture for VANETs

 University of Luxembourg  Luxembourg Kirchberg
The University of Luxembourg seeks to hire outstanding researchers at its Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), within the Networking Research Group (Netlab) headed by Prof. Thomas Engel.

SnT is carrying out interdisciplinary research in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) systems and services, often in collaboration with industrial, governmental or international partners.  SnT is active in several international research projects funded by the H2020 framework programme, and the European Space Agency. PhD candidate in Software Defined Architecture for VANETs (M/F)
The Ph.D. study program is 3 years, starting with a fixed term employment contract of 14 months extendable up to 36 months, on full time basis (40hrs/week).
Number of positions: 1
Your Role and Tasks
The PhD student at UL will be supervised by Prof. Thomas Engel, and benefit of his long-term expertise in vehicular networks. At the same time he/she will work in strict contact with Dr. Maria Rita Palattella, who will guide his/her work on SDN. During his/her PhD course the student will work on the definition of a SDN-architecture for VANETs. He/she will investigate how to adapt such paradigm to VANETs, taking into account mobility of the environment under exam. He will thus have to address issues such as the loss of connectivity with the SDN controller. With the final aim of designing SDN-enabled VANETs able to support several services, the PhD student will develop different methods for improving resource utilization (e.g., channel selection) and content distribution, by exploiting programmability and flexibility provided by SDN. Some of these schemes may also include the use of CCN and/or FC, in combination with SDN. To test and evaluate his/her results, the PhD student will be using discrete events simulators such as ns3, OMNeT++, and Veins. In particular he/she may use the Luxembourg SUMO traffic (LuSt) scenario (https://github.com/lcodeca/LuSTScenario/wiki/Luxembourg-SUMO-Traffic-%28LuST%29-Scenario).
The PhD position is offered within the upcoming INTER-CORE CONTACT project, which involves University of Bern, and HES-SO from Switzerland, and will take place between 2016 and 2019.
