PhD STUDENT Plasma Modelling

The Leibniz Institute for Plasma Research and Technology (INP Greifswald) is the biggest non-university institution in the field of low-temperature plasmas throughout Europe and ranks among the most modern institutions in this field worldwide. We are engaged in research and development FROM IDEA TO PROTOTYPE. In an international working environment, we deal with socially relevant challenges in the fields of Materials & Energy as well as Environment & Health. Currently the INP employs about 180 employees at three locations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

In the department “Plasma Modelling”, models and simulations are predominantly developed and applied for technological and scientific utilization potential of non-thermal plasmas at low and atmospheric pressure. The spectrum of models spans from describing individual plasma effects to a complete modelling of plasma sources and plasma processes.

For the project “Kinetic and hydrodynamic simulations of the rf plasma sheath” within the Collaborative Research Centre 1299 “The Plasma Interface”, we are seeking to hire - subject to project approval - for Greifswald starting on January 1st, 2018, a

Plasma Modelling

initially limited to 3 years / weekly working time 30 hours / TV-L Ost wage group E13.

Your tasks:
You carry out numerical modelling and analysis of argon and silane-based radio-frequency plasmas operating at low pressure. This involves
  • Setup of a self-consistent, time-dependent and spatially one-dimensional fluid model for low-pressure radio-frequency discharges in argon and its validation against kinetic simulations and measurements;
  • Extension of one-dimensional fluid model to two spatial dimensions and analysis the plasma response to a x-ray beam;
  • Incorporation of a realistic description of the plasma-surface interaction;
  •  Inclusion of balance equations and reaction pathways for species relevant for the deposition of thin films from silicon-hydride precursors and investigation of interaction of transient precursor species with solid surfaces.
  • you maintain a close collaboration with our project partners at Kiel university,
  • you document your work activities,
  • you write peer-reviewed publications.

Your profile:
  • Successfully completed higher education studies (Master of Science degree or Diploma) preferably in physics, mathematics, chemistry, electrical engineering or related fields,
  • Expertise in programming languages (e.g. Fortran, C++), software for data analysis (e.g. Matlab, Origin) and office software (e.g. MS Office, LaTeX),
  • Experiences in development and adaption of scientific codes,
  • Experiences in the field of modelling and analysis of low-temperature plasmas would be of advantage,
  • Results-oriented thinking,
  • Capacity for teamwork, commitment and self-dependent work ethics,
  • Good command of English.

We offer:
  • Payment and social services according to the collective wage agreement for Federal States (TV-L-(Ost)),
  • Technical facilities at the highest level,
  • Experienced and competent support during your doctoral thesis,
  • Internal trainings (e.g. project management, scientific writing),
  • Possibility to take part at national and international conferences,
  • A motivated team,
  • Flexible working hours,
  • A work environment certified as family-friendly.
