CECAD - Cluster of Excellence of the University of Cologne

The Cologne Cluster of Excellence in Cellular Stress Responses in Aging-associated Diseases provides an extremely dynamic environment for research into the aging process and its diseases. Our aim is to understand the molecular mechanisms which underlie the aging process, and thereby enable the development of new therapies for aging-associated diseases such as cancer, diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders. CECAD has an interdisciplinary and international approach – its outstanding groups of researchers are working in four main project areas. Thus, CECAD holds a leading position in international research on the aging process.

This provides us with many opportunities: Up to now the aging process has been examined from the perspective of different disciplines, but now the interdisciplinary approach of CECAD provides the opportunity to identify the intersections between the research areas, and thus find an underlying common cause for age-related diseases. The new laboratory facility is due to be ready by the end of 2012 – an important milestone in the consolidation of the communication network among the scientists in the University of Cologne, the University Hospital of Cologne and the Max Planck Institute for the Biology of Aging.

Research into age-related diseases is of very high social relevance – however, it is not simply about increasing people’s lifespan, but also ensuring that their quality of life remains good. This is an important concern of CECAD, and it is not only a reflection of societal themes in a research context. The demographic change which society is experiencing will continue over the next few decades, and even increase: CECAD’s research is characterized by its high level of societal interaction.

CECAD is funded via the DFG within the excellence initiative by the German federal and state governments.
