The Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen is one of the largest in Germany with around 40.000 students among which are more than 3500 foreign students. The FAU belongs to the German Universities Excellence Initiative. The Medical Faculty of the FAU has 30 clinical departments with more than 6000 employees working in patient care, clinical and experimental research units and more than 3000 students. This Faculty is an international top player in the fields of research and education with four main areas of research: i) immunology and infection research, ii) renal and vascular disease, iii) neurosciences, including pain and ophthalmology research, and iv) tumor research. The research focus is underlined by the presence of the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research (IZKF), the performance-related financing of young academics (ELAN), the Medical Immunology Campus Erlangen (MICE), Franz-Penzoldt Center (FPZ), the Center for Clinical Studies (CCS) and the recently opened Translational Research Center (TRC, interdisciplinary center for clinical research).
The Department of Medicine 1 consists of 12 independent research groups and has three laboratories located in the Kussmaul Campus for Medical Research, the Center for Interal Diseases (INZ) and the TRC staffed with more than 80 scientists and technical personal. There are currently more than 20 PhD students within the Department of Medicine 1. These students are invited to actively participate in a weekly progress report, journal club and to participate in weekly scientific meetings with invited national and international speakers.
