The Glomerular Research Group (Head: PD Dr. T.B. Huber) within the Renal Division in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital Freiburg focuses on glomerular biology and the pathophysiology of glomerular disease. Glomerular diseases account for approx. 80% of all cases of chronic kidney disease (CKD), with a high proportion of patients finally in need of dialysis or kidney transplantation. Although there is an increasing incidence and prevalence of CKD there are virtually no causal therapies available. Our aim is to unravel the fundamental biology and pathomechanisms within the unique structure of the glomerular filter and to identify new treatment targets. During the last ten years we have already pin pointed several signaling and metabolic pathways which play a decisive role in the initiation or progression of glomerular diseases.
