Bioinformatician - Computer Scientist - Mathematician – Systems Biologist

In the Division of Internal Medicine IV at the University Hospital of Freiburg, Germany, we are looking to hire a

DATA ANALYST (bioinformatician / computer scientist / mathematician / systems biologist)

as of September 1, 2011 or later, for three years with the option for extension. Payment is commensurate with German state tarif and experience, benefits are included.

The University of Freiburg, founded in 1457, is one of the nine German “Excellence Universities“. The Division of Internal Medicine IV is a research-oriented division with a focus on research related to kidney disease. Collaborations with many national and international partners exist. Freiburg has a large international student body. It is located in the Black Forest with a 30-minute drive to both Switzerland and France.

Primary duties:
• Analysis of high-throughput data with the goal of identifying risk factors for kidney disease (funded research grant)
o Statistical analysis of genome-wide association study data
o Statistical analysis of data from whole genome or exome sequencing projects
o Statistical analysis of data from other high-throughput approaches and network analysis
• Participation in planning and protocol development of epidemiological studies
• Participation in the preparation of research grants and publications

• Masters or PhD in statistics, bioinformatics, mathematics, or computer sciences (FH or university)
• Good knowledge in applied statistics, data analysis, programming, and data management
• Must be proficient in R, have advanced knowledge of working in Linux environment, should be proficient in perl
• Knowledge of a conventional statistical package such as SAS or Stata
• Good knowledge of English (spoken and written), German helpful but not necessary
• Must like interdisciplinary work in a research team (locally and internationally)

There are multiple opportunities for continuing education and the development of an independent research career. Candidates should already be authorized to work in Germany. Travel to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, is possible in order to collaborate with US colleagues.
