Universität Regensburg

Institut für Medizinische Mikrobiologie und Hygiene, Molekulare Mikrobiologie (Virologie)

The group of Professor Wagner is dedicated to the development and preclinical as well as clinical testing of HIV candidate vaccines and, more recently, also vaccines targeting various other viruses such as Ebola, Marburg, Lassa or Cytomegalovirus. According to the necessity of rational vaccine design the group is focussing on various aspects of epidemiology, viral pathogenisis, morphogenisis, replication as well as vaccine design and manufacturing. Promising candidates are validated immunologically ex vivo on human cells, in vivo in specialized small animal models and, if successful, forwarded to clinical studies.
The group is fully financed by national and international grants such as the Hector Foundation, the Bavarian Research Foundation (Bayerische Forschungsstiftung), the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the European Union and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
