The Sühnel Laboratory (Biocomputing Group) at the Leibniz Institute for Age Research, Fritz-Lipmann-Institute, Jena, Germany is inviting applications for a
Postdoctoral position (TV-L E13)
One postdoctoral position is immediately available to participate in a project within the newly established Jena Centre for Systems Biology of Ageing – JenAge funded by the German Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF). The Centre consists of 10 experimental and theoretical groups from the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU), the University Clinic Jena (UKJ), the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research – Hans Knöll Institute (HKI) and the Leibniz Institute for Age Research – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI). Our group is responsible for data management, for the setup of a new JenAge database devoted to molecular, cellular and organismic aspects of ageing and also for the Centre management. We have a longstanding expertise in database development. For other activities of our group please visit (http://www.fli-leibniz.de/groups/suehnel_en.php).
Funding is available for three years with a possible prolongation up to five years. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate with a strong experience in programming and database systems as well as a good background in biology or chemistry. The successful candidate will closely work together with another postdoctoral researcher in our group also involved in JenAge data management and database development. The project is pursued in a particularly close collaboration with the text mining group at the FSU. Generally, good communication skills are a necessary prerequisite for this work because data management requires a strong interaction with all data-generating and modeling groups within the JenAge Centre. The candidate is expected to spend part of the time to management tasks in close collaboration with the Centre’s coordinator. The latter task also includes website maintenance and public relation efforts.

Our Mission
Human ageing is a multifactorial process controlled by both environmental and genetic factors. Our mission is to understand the molecular mechanisms that underlie the ageing process and that lead to age-related diseases. We hope that eventually this knowledge can contribute to a more healthy ageing of people. The central question we are aiming at answering is
«What are the mechanisms that induce senescence or that cause the development of diseases related to age?».
Our institute focusses on biological and biomedical research on molecular mechanisms of selected age-related diseases and of senescence. The scientific research groups at FLI cover a broad expertise in molecular and cellular biology, structural biology, bioinformatics, biophysics, biochemistry, genomics and animal research.
The combined scientific expertise of our groups, in cooperation with our academic and industry partners, allows to address the question of ageing and disease mechanisms on molecular, cellular and organismic levels. In addition to basic research, attention is also directed towards knowledge transfer to medical application, to prevention and therapy.
