We're seeking a Platform / DevOps Engineer to own and evolve the infrastructure that enables our data scientists and AI researchers to move faster. You'll build robust CI/CD pipelines, maintain our databases and APIs, containerize research tools, and ensure our digital platform scales reliably as BioCopy grows. CI/CD & Automation:
- Design, implement, and maintain Jenkins-based CI/CD pipelines for automated testing and deployment
- Establish code standards and automated deployment workflows across multiple Ubuntu servers
- Build and manage Docker container registry for research tools and web applications
- Implement blue-green deployments, rollback procedures, and release management
- Automate repetitive tasks through shell scripting and configuration management
- Manage bare-metal Ubuntu servers, including systemd services, nginx/Traefik reverse proxies, and cron jobs
- Ensure environment consistency across dev/staging/production
- Set up and maintain system monitoring, log aggregation, and alerting for infrastructure health
- Plan and implement automated backup strategies for PostgreSQL databases and critical systems
- Optimize resource utilization and system performance
- Build, optimize, and maintain Docker images for scientific applications
- Implement multi-stage builds and container networking patterns
- Manage Docker Compose orchestrations for multi-service applications
- Establish best practices for container security and resource limits
- Administer PostgreSQL databases (schema design, migrations, performance tuning)
- Design and implement REST APIs using Flask or Django for data access and tool integration
- Develop backend services to support internal applications (SCORE suite: calcSCORE, microarray-layout, Anabel)
- Implement authentication, error handling, and API documentation (OpenAPI/Swagger)
- Maintain Redis caching layer for performance optimization
- Build and maintain internal full-stack web applications using Flask/Django backends
- Support React frontends for internal tools (understanding of React workflows helpful)
- Integrate APIs with data science workflows and experimental data pipelines
- Ensure code quality through testing, review processes, and documentation
- Work closely with data scientists and AI researchers to containerize and deploy their tools
- Own projects end-to-end: from repository setup to production deployment
- Collaborate with the Head of Digital and Data to shape infrastructure strategy
- Document systems, processes, and architectural decisions for knowledge sharing
- Provide troubleshooting support and implement timely solutions for infrastructure issues
Who You Are
- Strong DevOps foundation: Comfortable managing Linux (Ubuntu) servers, systemd, nginx/Traefik, cron jobs, and system administration
- CI/CD expertise: Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (preferably Jenkins)
- Docker proficiency: Building images, Docker Compose, container registries, and containerization best practices
- Database administration: PostgreSQL schema design, optimization, migrations, backup/recovery
- Backend development: Python with Flask or Django for API and application development
- Version control: Git workflows, code review, and collaborative development practices
- Automation mindset: Shell scripting, configuration management, and infrastructure as code
- Ownership mentality: Can plan, execute, and maintain projects independently with minimal supervision

Bonus qualifications:
- Frontend development experience (React or similar frameworks)
- Experience with resource management systems (Slurm or equivalent)
- Exposure to bioinformatics or scientific computing platforms
- Familiarity with monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack)
- Experience scaling systems in research or biotech environments
