The Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies , HITS gGmbH, was established 2010 by SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. It conducts basic research in the natural sciences, mathematics and computer science with a focus on the processing, structuring, and analyzing of large amounts of complex data and the development of computational methods and software. The research fields range from molecular biology to astrophysics.
An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects. The base funding of HITS is provided by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.

Medical Data Specialist (m/f/x)
50% part time
Your role
Working closely with project partners across Germany, you will be responsible for conceptualising, refining, mapping and establishing metadata models and data dictionaries for research data from health studies, as well as defining standardisation requirements for the services and tools developed in NFDI4Health.
Your responsibilities include:
- Working closely with the NFDI4Health user communities to develop standards for data and metadata.
- Analyzing the users’ needs and translate them into standardization requirements
- Providing user support via the NFDI4Health helpdesk and direct user contacts
- Contributing to user trainings, project meetings and scientific conferences in close collaboration with peers within and beyond NFDI4Health
- Actively participating in an interdisciplinary team of data stewards at HITS’ partner institutions
- Working closely with software developers to implement tools and services
- Drive and contribute to the standardization of health studies, their documentation, and their data, as well as the corresponding formats, terminologies and metadata
What qualifies you for this job
- University degree in medical informatics, bioinformatics (or another medical/life science field), or in medical documentation, data science, computer science or equivalent
- Interest in supporting users of the NFDI4Health infrastructure as data steward for (meta-)data
- Experience with metadata modelling and mapping data structures in in the health domain as well as with structuring and/or analyzing corresponding data and metadata
- Ideally knowledge about medical (meta-)data standards and formats (HL7 FHIR, CDISC ODM, etc.) and terminologies/ontologies (e.g., SNOMED CT, ICD-10, LOINC, etc.)
- Ideally previous experience with medical databases and mapping tools for metadata
- Very good communication skills in English and German
