At Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf around 35,000 students study on a modern compact campus under conditions ideally suited to academic life. 

Research and teaching at the Institute for Microbiology is composed of three fields: cell biology, pathogenicity and biotechnology.
To study these fields we use both prokaryotic and, increasingly, eukaryotic microorganisms as model systems including the phytopathogenic smut fungi.
