The Clinic for Radiotherapy at the University of Duisburg-Essen Medical School invites applications for a PhD position (65% TV-L) in the Division of Radiation Biology.
The position is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR), as part of a project entitled: “Steps Towards Radiation Protection 2.0: Genome-Wide Analyses of Structural Changes in Cells Following High- and Low-LET Radiation.”The project aims to test next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies as innovative tools in radiation protection. Ionizing radiation induces DNA damage, the repair of which can lead to structural chromosomal abnormalities and diverse sequence alterations. These genomic alterations can be detected and characterized using next-generation sequencing and possibly developed into radiation-specific genomic “signatures”. Using these technologies, the project seeks to develop practical applications including detection of radiation exposures, dose estimations, and assessment of individual repair capacity and radiosensitivity. The research activities include genome-wide analyses of structural changes induced in the genome by low- and high-LET radiation and the characterization of the specific DNA repair pathways underpinning their formation. The work requires experience in NGS, bioinformatics, q-PCR, and molecular cytogenetics.
