The Emmy Noether Research Group of Dr. Jirka Peschek at the Heidelberg University Biochemistry Center (BZH) is offering a fully funded PhD position to investigate RNA ligases in RNA processing and repair.
Our laboratory aims to understand how different classes of RNAs are enzymatically processed into their functional states and how their structural integrity is monitored and maintained. We are particularly interested in protein-catalyzed non-conventional RNA splicing. Using an interdisciplinary approach ranging from biochemistry and structural biology to cell biology, we dissect the mechanisms and molecular machinery underlying these processes.

PhD Student Position in Biochemistry – RNA ligases in RNA processing and repair (m/f/d)
Activities and responsibilities
The aim of this project is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms and cellular roles of ATP-dependent RNA ligases. The PhD project will continue a central line of our research, building on a strong foundation of recent publications. The successful candidate will reconstitute RNA processing mechanisms in vitro and use a combination of biochemical, structural, and cell biological methods to characterize RNA ligase activity. The project will also involve the development of high-throughput functional assays.
Qualification profile
We seek enthusiastic candidates with a strong interest in RNA biology and enzyme mechanisms. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in biochemistry or a closely related field. Experience in biochemistry and molecular biology is required, while experience in structural biology and/or mammalian cell biology is considered an advantage.
You are a good fit for our group if you can work independently while also demonstrating strong team spirit. A good command of the English language is expected.
